With a lot of mileage under the belt since Autumn Head, the boys set off early in the morning with a point to prove. We set off with a cunning plan - leather it off the start, welly it past the plough, and then try not to die on the reach. We executed the plan spurred on by carefully selected calls discussed at crew dinner, and finished the race pleased with the work we'd put in. Our hard work was rewarded with third place in our division, second amongst college boats and first amongst colleges not named after Saints. With less than a month until Fairbairns, we're keen to use this boost in momentum to keep progressing!

After finally working out how to row as a crew the day before, W1 were full of optimism arriving at the boathouse for our first race as a crew this year! We kept ourselves together on the way up the river and even practised a burst with some impressive splits. Then once we were at marshalling we successfully safely kept Bucky away from the many, many boats that surrounded us - and finally it was time to race!

According to 8/9 people in the boat, our first minute was legendary, and the best rowing our crew has done yet - as I entered the pain cave 10 seconds in, I can only hope they were right! We then carefully weaved through the corners, one of my favourite parts as I get an extra excuse to absolutely unsustainably send it for a few strokes. Then we made it to the reach, and between Sam on the bank, and Leonie and Fiona in the boat we had an impressive chorus of cheering and “yeah Clare”s to power us along to the bunting finish line. We continued to row well together through to the end and finished with a very respectable time of 10:03.6 and remain determined to reach sub 2:00 splits next time!

With some last minute seat changes, a meme-filled race plan from Dan, and the promise of race cake, W2 was feeling suspiciously positive about Winter Head. This positivity did take a significant hit sponsored by marshalling for upwards of 30 minutes somehow both in a tree and in the middle of the river, but at least the Bradley siblings got to say hello to each other from their respective boats. After a paddle to the start line, we flew off with one of the best rate builds we’ve accomplished so far. Everything was going well until we hit the Plough, where what can only be described as a total systems failure occurred. With the help of Gripper and Dan screaming at us to pull ourselves together, we recovered our timing as we turned onto the Reach. A last ditch push had us soaring across the bunting-festooned finish line in 11:25.8 - beating ‘the boat’s’(read: Dan’s) goal of being faster than last year’s W2. We were 5th in our category and we’re ready to crush the competition in Fairbairns!
