Lowe Double Sculls 2011
Monday 25th - Wednesday 27th April
Men's Double Scull A
1st round: opponent scratched, Quarter-final: lost easily to Hardy/Tran-Viet (Jesus)
Well, for only two outings preparation (one of which was a double lock run in the morning-which was immense), and for something we approached as somewhat of a 'Jolly' I think this was a pretty damn good day; despite my god awful sun-burn.... Amusement in the first round when Chris Kerr arrived at Baits Bite not by water but on a bike without a partner. After some discussion we agreed reluctantly to wait until he found either his original, or an alternative partner; we did assume though that he would pass this by the marshals, and considering he didn't we instead rowed back to the boat house to re-fuel. Now quite knackered (having originally assumed we were to be demolished by Chris Kerr et al) it wasn't long until we had to get back in. By this time we were really feeling the pain, and the sculling wasn't so sweet. The actual race itself was somewhat worse, with some old style 'tense up in a race when you're not that confident' they munched into us, and half way down first post reach were all over us. Our sculling was not a homage to great finesse, my finish especially dragging many a stroke down to stroke-side. A sneaky manoeuvre through the gut saw them overtake us (despite my best efforts to 'accidentally' cut them up) though pleasingly they crashed into the inside bank of grassy. Having to go wide to avoid the collision we didn't make up as much ground as we could, and indeed by the Plough they were off again. Only by the Reach did our sculling improve a bit, to the extent that if we had started behind, you wouldn't think we were doing that badly....overall knackering; and proof that sweep is not the best prep for sculls!
