Results and reports by Event

After quite a disappointing race last week and results that were below our standard, we were determined to succeed in this race. Weather was ideal, the sun was out, and yes, the race was quite short. As Julia pointed, this race (2km) was considerably shorter than the pieces we regularly do 4 times during our outings. This was perfect to set out with what we had been working on this week. During the week, we had been working on the 1st minute of the race which, according to gripper was lost if we didn't attack it. We needed to fuel that yellow fire. From our tedious heavy winds to rate 31 only 10 days before, we had made consderable progress and were finally unleashing some decent power at a solid rate 38. After having to convince the canoeists that they could not join the race, we set off as 1rst of the division, in front of Wolfson. Being first in the division wan't too bad since we knew we would build into any boat that was in front of us and 'we would walk away from wolfson easily' (captain). Starting the race as planned, we built a solid rate 38 off the start. Coming on first post, there was a slight let down in pressure (something that needs fixing) which was recovered on plough reach with some power calls. At this point, the legs were hurting quite badly, and we were wondering if there was a problem, but no, it was just because we were actually pushing thanks to a solid platform on which we could build. Once passed grassy, we knew we were close to the end. Our legs were screaming but we kept the focus. After a 2*20 technical call, we brought the rate up and flew by the finish on some very solid pushes.

The race felt really good, we all had some proper race coughs and a nice burning feeling in our legs. Our amazing cox had made some race cupcakes. That and winning definitely made that pain worth it.

The work for next races will probably be on having that same fire for longer races and having a base rate at 36.

Newnham short course began for W2 as it surely did for all the other crews, by watching a pair of kayakers hanging out in the middle of the river (although undoubtedly, it was a beautiful day for it.) Having had a couple of solid outings in the week and one with our sub Elly we felt confident after last weeks division win. Implementing all of our technical critiques and also with the help of our excellent cox Emma, we had a great start to the race. During the midweek outings we had really focused on keeping our speed on the corners, something we managed successfully to do during the race. A few minutes in we settled into rate 32 whilst as a whole trying to focus on technique, keeping length in our strokes and power on the legs. With everyone giving it their all however, we began to tire during the second half. Just as energy was starting to lag, we suddenly all heard the words “Power down Clare!” A quick glance to our left and we could see Gripper cycling along side. It was just the motivation we needed. The last 500 meters we emptied the tank, on each stroke giving it everything we had through gritted teeth. The boat was moving faster and the last few power strokes although painful, took us to the finish, reminding us all what we were capable of when we push.

As a whole the race, although grueling, technically felt like one of the best. After only a few outings we have managed to progress quickly with technique improving in every session. So with a few more outings who knows what’s next for W2. Bring on the next race!
