"Whilst the idea of what constitutes good rowing varies from coach to coach in the subtleties, there is a fair amount of common ground which all coaches share. I think it is fair to say that no coach watching your performance against Pembroke would have said it was good."

Round 1: Lost to Christ Church Oxford, Plate Round 1: Lost to Wadham

It was never going to be easy going into a division with mainly M1s to compete against. The first race, billed as Oxford's best college boat we should've been destroyed. We had quarter of a length at the start, then down to a length behind. Halfway through their bowman caught a massive crab and we got it back to level and held it until the last 300m where they pulled away to a length. Not the best row but one with full commitment, most of the race was fairly set and the amount the boat speed picked up after Becky's 'they've caught a crab, ****ing row' was fantastic. The race against Wadham was lost by a much larger margin, over 3 lengths at the end. Whilst being quite massively behind by the end I think we might have been faster on the second race than the first, which at least shows we won't give up when races get hard.

We were the underdogs. But we were pretty spirited underdogs and the fact that we held Christ Church to 1 1/4 lengths shows a) having guts counts for a lot and b) you boys really can hold it together and scare other crews when you want to. The result against Wadham was a bit disappointing and showed that there are areas we need to improve on: length in the stroke at sprint rates and keeping calm enough (myself massively included) so that you guys aren't just ripping up water and rushing under the pressure when the race doesn't go quite to plan. That said, most of us haven't raced much side-by-side and certainly not at such massive regattas (as proven by the delights of weigh-in and manoeuvring the boat at the startline...), which perhaps didn't help tension-wise. Who knows: in two more years time, with more practise, maybe we could take Christ Church down! In the meantime let's work on what needs working on and remember the good things from the day: if nothing else our rows down to the start included what I reckon is the most sat paddling I've seen from you with the most epic cover... and it was sunny! Bedford was fun :) Oh, and Rob, I'm pretty sure I never said they'd caught a crap...
