Spring Head to Head in store for the M2 boys in weather that can only be described as heavenly. The first of two 2Ks started out well, with Simon’s new found quality as a rate setter coming into the fore with a constant rate 34 held until upping by 2 for the last stretch. With the benefits of the current on our side and a sit that glided across the water, the time of 6:51.3 was a great boost to the morale of the boat, who having flied and died the whole way now had to do it all over again. This was no issue for the boys in black and yellow as everyone, having ditched all layers save the unisuit to deal with the sunshine, rallied for a mighty follow up against the stream to come home with a 7:03.8, pushing off the puddles all the way to the railway bridge. The sit proved not to be a fluke, as there was so much confidence that even Conlan took a step into the unknown by pulling off some early squares. All in all, a strong showing all round, with a result of 2nd in our division and 2 times so good that we want them to stand as our start of term tests. A row to be proud of to kick off the term for M2 as an 8’s boat, with a new-buttery brunch on the banks of the Cam proving a welcome reward for our efforts.

W2 raced in the Mays 2nd Division category of Spring Head to Head because W2 is indeed in Mays 2nd Div (or will be soon at least). After showing up early for marshalling because we were so excited, we had a strong first half that was only a little splashy. Becca’s Fruit Pastilles and Qing’s chatter fueled us while we were waiting, and we soon went off again for the second (slightly splashier) half of the race. We finished in a time of 16:24.6, placing us as the third fastest W2 out of the eight racing – not bad at all for our first race of term!

Saturday's glorious weather presented ideal racing conditions and an enticing start to M3's Mays campaign. Armed with Grip's tough love ('More ergos gentlemen...') we set off and completed the downstream leg in 7:51. Some slightly more tired chunky rowing on the upstream leg took us home in 8:48. No crustaceans were caught and/or liberated, though plenty of room for improvement over the coming weeks was evident. More lacking than our technique and timing was author of this race report's application of suncream, resulting in shoulders striped like a tub of Neapolitan ice cream by the end of the day.

W3 had a non-traditional racing experience for head to head this term. We warmed by practising backing down skills for a considerable amount of time during marshalling, coached by a friendly Eddies crew who very kindly shared their raspberries and sweets. Having made plans for upcoming socials, we set out on the first 2k. We made a solid start holding rate 32 down the reach. We then decided it would be appropriate to practise Bumps a little early this term, as Emma expertly steered past first post and grassy corner mere inches away from the bank. Trinity Hall seized a hard fought opportunity to overtake on the second corner, finally clearing the way to allow W3 a final burst over the finish line. The second 2k however proved chaotic. Determined to catch the hall crew now starting in front of us, our enthusiasm was no match for Penny's rudder wire, which snapped in Emma's hands very dramatically on the first corner. Without a hint of panic, and a gentle grazing of the bank, we resettled and pushed off again to finish the rest of the second 2k. A solid effort from W3, we hope for less chaotic races to come!
