12=/21 Women's Student Senior VIIIs in 10 mins 17 secs (1000m: 3 mins 48 secs)

Christina Pettit reports:

I was really pleased with the result of this race - it was for the most part a committed and comfortable row. The first half in particular was impressive - the stroke felt long and unrushed, and we built and maintainted a high rate throughout, and I think we all enjoyed hearing Mike calling that we were on station with CUW. The technique was lost a little in the second half as we became tired - consistency is something we need to work on in the run up to Fairburns. Overall a really encouraging effort.

Rebecca Chamberlin reports:

Well, wow, I knew you guys were a committed crew but, I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting this either! I haven't seen you alot in training, but I think this was the most together I've seen you and senior crews could learn a thing or two from stern four especially about what it means to keep heads up and have a strong core. Technically very good and with the power to match. Everyone was focussed and the team effort to re-gain what was lost by one crab was admirable and successful. The pushes were responsive and I could see that every crew member was giving it all they'd got (including you Jamie - I know not having a mic isn't easy!). Excellent lines round Grassy (I like that it was tight enough to panic the mashall!) and under the railway bridge. An incredible effort to push onto the next crew for the final couple of hundred metres. Good job.

Jamie Klair reports:

well, wow, I just wasnt expecting this. oh gosh, well I'd like to thank the boys, oh and Dirk and Bex ... the marshalls, thanks for making this all possible, the river cam: you beauty, and I should probably thank my parents for passing the genes to make me the fine 5'6 stature that I am today.

on a more serious note, pulling together inspite of having no boat to push off, no cox box and no funky lycras shows the incredible amount of teamness that this well-oiled machine of a crew possess. So proud of these pir-viiis!

2nd Men's Coxed IV

Bow: David Jessop 2: Vas Vorontsov 3: Matt Causier 4: James Marshall 5: tbc 6: tbc 7: tbc Stroke: tbc Cox: Ed Mills

13th/15 Men's Student Senior IV+ in 10 mins 35 secs (1000m: 3 mins 48 secs)

David Jessop reports:

The boat felt very nervous for this race. It certainly didn't have the effortless feel of our (one) other outing three weeks ago. Having said that the first half was pretty good, with a comfortable rate 30/31 until Grassy allowing us to munch into the lead of the boat in front. Grassy seemed to destabilise us though, and the second half of the race fell apart somewhat. The other men's IVs that matched our first 1000m time finished over half a minute ahead, showing what we could have done with perhaps a couple more outings together.

Despite a disappointing second half there are still positives: we didn't crash (well, during the race at least...), the first half felt fine, and there is a lot of potential for big improvements!

Edward Mills reports:

I'll be honest - I'm pleased mainly because I didn't make us hit Grassy Corner for the second race in a row. (Although had it not been for some timely advice from Matt, I probably would have steered us through the wrong apex...)

Seriously, though, I think that there was a lot to build on from that race. The rolling start - our first together as a IV+ - was excellent. Although there were a few wobbles along the way (which actually had some pretty serious repercussions: I hope your thumb's alright, Vas!) we really came together as a crew, particularly towards the end.

I also learnt that using the cox-box to tell stories during the wait ("Are you sitting comfortably? Good. Then I'll begin...") does not go down well with the crew. I reckon next time I'll have to try Jabberwocky.
