1st in 4:22.4, setting a new course record!
Knowing that the top three crews (river position wise - Caius, Pembroke, Maggie) were racing and that this was going to be our last race before bumps we really wanted to put in a good performance. Race format is standing start with the start time taken roughly 10 seconds after. Our start was a little shaky, first few strokes were ok but strokes 4-8 weren't fantastic - which was odd because in training it is usually the other way around. Undeterred, we hit the first minute hard. Before we knew it we had rounded Ditton corner and a call on 'the toes' out of the corner got the spring back into the boat, rating 39. When we got onto the reach we just ploughed on through and got into a very solid rhythm with some pretty chunky power. The reach was a bit of a blur to be honest, but we made a technical focus coming under the railway bridge to set things straight. We decided to wind up for the finish from the corner up to the finish at the P&E, which when we lengthened onto 38 generated some real power. To be honest, I thought the finish line was further away than it was (thought it was between P&E and top finish), so I think we could have started our sprint for the line earlier and eeked out a few more pain faces to squeeze a few seconds more. The end result though... fastest boat of the day and beat the course record!! It wasn't the cleanest row we have ever had, but it was committed and had some good stonk behind it. The atmosphere within the boat is really positive and we will be using that in every session from now till bumps to really squeeze out more speed. Cave Adsum.
