1st Novice Men's VIII

Beat Darwin by ¼ of a length; beat Queens’ by 1 and ½ lengths; lost to FaT in the semi-final.
Shamsher Bhangal reports:
After a tight but successful first race against Darwin which Clare NM1 won by a margin of 1/4 a length, NM1 next found themselves up against Queens’. Queens’ NM1 had, the week before, beaten Clare in the final of Emma Sprints. It was to the great delight of Clare, then, that the boys comfortably cruised past the Queens’ boat, crossing the finish line 1 and 1/2 lengths ahead and winning their second race. Next the Clare men had their final race against FaT, in the semi-final. FaT had a strong start and ultimately came out victorious, but Clare certainly kept them on their toes.
Despite multiple long stints sat wating on the cold river in between races, Clare NM1 were happy with their performance and had a lot of fun! A big thank you to all the marshals, who did a great job given the difficult circumstances.

1st Novice Women's VIII

Beat Sidney Sussex, lost to to Wolfson in the quarter final.
Ella MacPherson reports:
NW1 built on their good performance at Emma Sprints at CNR. They raced Sidney Sussex first and a high rate start meant they quickly took the lead. Clare held them off all the way to the finish and won the race comfortably. The crew was tired but excited to race again! In the quarter final, NW1 faced a powerful Wolfson crew and unfortunately lost. However, they were proud of keeping neat despite being tired and responding to Emma’s calls for power.

The mixed crew (racing as Clare B in the men’s plate) had an enjoyable first race of the term at CNR. Although they were racing a full men’s crew, they still pushed hard and kept the gap narrow throughout the race. Some motivational calls from Becca helped them cross the finish line just behind Maggie NM2. It was a really fun experience and they all enjoyed copious amounts of race cake back at the boathouse!
