1st Race Lost to Clare Hall NW1 , 2nd Race beat Jesus NW2
I am really impressed by these girls! In their first race Clare Hall decided on the start that they much preferred our side of the river and the resulting clash put us off their start. By the time we had become detangled Clare Hall had made just over a length on us we collected themselves and some neat rowing saw us hold Clare Hall for the rest of the race.
After some sunny marshalling and some slight confusion about who are next opposition would be from Emma we headed down to race Jesus. Unimpeded this time the start went really well and we pulled out a lead of a few seats over Jesus. The great rowing from the first race continued and we continued to pull out to about a length and a half as we went past the railings. A spectacular crab from Eliana (over the head, feet out the shoes) had me panic a little but an equally spectacular recovery saw the girls get back to all eight rowing and hold Jesus a length and a half back to the finish line!
A shame about the first race but overall a very impressive first set of racing! Special mention to Betsy-Ann who I threw in at the deep end for her first experience of bowside!

First race lost to Tit Hall NW1 by 2 lengths, second race won against Wolfson NW1 by 2 1/2 lengths
Our first race was a real disappointment, not because of the way we rowed but because of the way Tit Hall did. Having started slightly ahead, they then went in for a blade clash when it was clear they weren't going to make any progress on us by rowing, and in fact we were starting to catch them. We then couldn't take advantage of the crab they had, because their oars were in the way. After generously moving back over to their own side of the river, they then caused another blade clash during which both of our bow pair crabbed, before proceeding back over to their own side of the river to finish. Stay classy guys. Special mention also goes to the JU who didn't think it deserved disqualification.
On a more positive note, the race against Wolfson was utterly unambiguous. We got half a length on them from the start, I was level with their bow girl after an excellent 10-stroke push, and from that point every stroke we did was putting more distance between us and them. A few timing issues further up the reach shouldn't detract from what was a very satisfying race (against the boat who'll be against us in round 1 of CNR, no less). It would have been nice to go further on in the competition, but at least we showed how well we can do when luck's not against us.
