“You see that boat there?”
“That boat is cannon fodder”
-Hugo, who wasn’t talking about our boat (but probably should have been)
The Newnham short course was M3’s first ever o̶u̶t̶i̶n̶g race as a full crew, and we made sure to hit the waters (and other boats… and the bank…) HARD in our debut to the Cam racing scene. These young scions of Clare were mentally, physically, and spiritually ready; and on the 2nd February, we all knew our time had come. The tactic of clashing oars with other boats (to display dominance, of course) was perhaps not a new one among college M3’s but I’m pleased to say that we took it to a higher level by attempting to assault a houseboat on our way down to the reach. Although none of the opposing crews were around to witness our martial feat, we can be sure that neither the passing Clare M2 nor the immobile houseboat will be thinking of taking us on any time soon. The ‘short’ race ran from the motorway bridge to the railway bridge, a total of almost 2km which M3 finished in the stellar time of 8:35 – not bad! (Not particularly good either, but we’re working on that.) We even managed to abstain from any crabs the entire race (!) – until I put my blade in upside down on the way back to the boathouse, and was summarily demoted to M4 for my incompetence. All in all, my first, and last race with M3 was an unforgettable experience – and I wish them many great races to come.
