First in the semi-final against Peterborough City and Churchill W1 in 1 minute 41 seconds; Second in the final to Christs' W1 (but only by 1 second!) in 1 minute 44 seconds

Esther Momcilovic reports:

Our first race was described as a bit 'routine' but what was good was that it didn't have first race nerves that have so often let us down, and Stu said our quality of rowing was head and shoulders above our competitors. Going into the final, based on times, our main rivals were Christs'. Christs' were pretty confident in their chances, so we resolved to really push onto them, having only been a second slower in the heat. And push onto them we did! We held them for pretty much the first half of the course, with me and the cox changing places every stroke. When we had our lift call just before a minute in we really started to come into them. Unfortunately, Christs' were obviously alarmed by this and had an extra hard push to hold us off, and by the end we were two or three seats down on them, finishing a second behind again. Nevertheless, we certainly gave them a run for their money and surprised them with how fast we were. A good day's racing :D

WINNERS of the Novice Mens VIIIs. Won heat in 1 minute 31 seconds; Won final in 1 minute 32 seconds

Rebecca Chamberlin reports:

Well, Matt's report says all the important technical stuff (incidentally, I couldn't read the rate on the screen in the final - I just yelled 38 to encourage you). Sure, it really wasn't that pretty unless you were focussing on our winning distances. We certainly kept up our 'washing machine' reputation - possibly even more so in the second race - but while we definitely have a few things to work on (places, finishes, rhythm, feathering, length, stearing...) the immense and sustained power got us results to prove that we are Bosch, not Basics.

Matthew Causier reports:

Race 1: After boating rather late we had to paddle straight to the start and the boat felt rather tense. However the nerves were expressed in the right way through power. After our start (which we felt was scrappy but still seemed to work well enough) we 'settled' at rate 41/40 and kept it up for pretty much the entire course. It felt like after half way the power dropped slightly, but this was probably due to the fact that although all eyes were naturally glued to the head in front of us the boats we were racing were clearly visible with about 2 lengths of clear water behind us. We then got ready for the final somewhat encouraged that our time was the same as M1's.

Race 2: After the experience of the last race we made sure we boated in plenty of time. This time the rate settled to a slightly more sustainable 38. It didn't feel quite as good as the previous race but was still more than enough. By the 200m to go stage we were about a length up and knew we just had to keep going to win. We did.

We are officially no longer novices, well done chaps (and chapette).
