First up was Maggie. After a fast start from us, we were up a seat or two. Unfortunately they began to pull ahead as we settled into a rhythm and won by a length. An hour later, we faced Pembroke, comfortably winning. For the final race of the day, in the plate final, we were up against Kings. We were pretty matched for most of the course, but they just managed to beat us to the finish.

In our first race of the day we were racing Pembroke. Our start was strong and quick, getting up to rate 42 before settling at 38. This meant we gained on Pembroke straight away. Despite the high rate our rhythm felt controlled and we kept gaining in the first half of the course. With Stefan’s kill call we managed to keep it up around the corner and we won the race! With no break, we rowed back to race a very strong Trinity Hall, sadly with less success. Overall a day of (a lot of) sunny marshalling and some good races which showed our hard work is paying off and that we have lots to build on from here. Special mention to Sophie who subbed in at the last minute!

On Sunday the M2 raced in the Spring Regatta, a race that was a sprint in distance but a marathon in time consumption. Marshalling was chaos, crews were strewn about the river in no particular order, clear from the fact that we were anywhere near Caius M2. However, their obnoxious Puregym logos and annoying war cries didn't intimidate us. In fact, it spurred us on to plot and scheme the ways in which we could subtly dismantle their boat without their knowing. Unfortunately for us, fortunately for them, we lacked the necessary tools for such a job (a Bosch power drill and saw) and allowed them to proceed unaffected. Having waited 2 hours since pushing off from the bank, we finally rowed up for marshalling - it was time to cook. As we eyed up our first batch, Queens M2, we felt confident in our culinary capabilities, Benson has been training, Shamsher has been focussing, Ferdi has been eating his banana pancakes - we were ready. The race was how we like our tomatoes - chopped. Having preheated the ovens, we set off with impressive power, disregarding all tech that head chef Grip had ever taught us. Whilst it wasn't pretty, it got the job done - we maintained a lead over our rivals for the entirety of the race, only letting them approach once the roast was done and it was time for a rest. We then refuelled on sous chef Molly's emergency fudge and prepared for our next race against FaT M2. Although comprised of more trinmos than our collective bumps net score, they were unfortunately the faster crew and had us for lunch. They took off at a superior speed and the chefs became the cheffed. FaT M2, although we hip hip and hoorayed you, don't get used to it, we will see you in May Bumps and will make a michelin star meal of you.

Racing started slightly too early, with an ‘at the boathouse’ time of 8:45 am on a Saturday! After a quick pep talk and some early morning croissants, eaten by our lovely stroke women for some free speed, we hit the water and raced it down to marshalling. Our first race came quickly and hit the reach at rate 37 which settled down to a comfortable 35 for the rest of the race. Whilst slightly un-sat, we managed to slowly pass St Edmunds off the start and continued our lead all the way to the finish line, despite St Edmunds wildly quick push of the bridge. Our second race started pretty much as soon as we had returned down to the bottom of the reach. We lined up beside St Hughes who reassured us that we ‘might win’ and should ‘have fun’ racing them. The race started again at 37, this one felt much more technical and much more sat, despite this, the Hughes girls managed to pull away from us ever so slightly and kept their advantage until the railway bridge where they pushed off and gained another half a boat length on us, finished a boat length in front. All in all, we loved the racing and are so excited for Bumps!
